Impian Malaysia not a bribe, says DAP lawmaker

DAP’s Impian Malaysia project includes healthcare in rural areas. – Facebook pic, March 6, 2015.DAP today defended its Impian Malaysia project as a community development service to help the marginalised and impoverished groups against detractors who said it might not translate into votes for the party in future elections.Yeo Bee Yin, the Damansara Utara assemblyman, said that project was meant to close the socio-economic gap between urban and rural areas, and urged more Malaysians to volunteer with it.“We believe by doing justice, we can achieve justice, and we will continue to do what we feel is the right thing to do.“We’re not just trying to help these rural villagers in terms of infrastructural development, but we also want them to see a little bit of the outside world."Impian Malaysia is a DAP-driven project funded by donations from the public. It does upgrading works to infrastructure in rural areas such as improving clean water supply, education, providing proper housing, healthcare and economic development. The initiative first kicked off in 2013, launched by the party's parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and focused on rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak in its early stages. It was said to be an effort by the party then to win over the electorate ahead of the 13th general election in May 2013.Recently, the party also launched the “Gabungan Impian Kelantan" in collaboration with 39 non-governmental organisations to help rebuild and assist victims of Kelantan’s worst flooding in a decade. To date, Impian Malaysia has completed 25 sub-projects in both the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak with the participation of around 180 volunteers.Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming, who volunteers with Impain Malaysia, said he hoped the federal government in its revamp of the National Service programme for school-leavers would include social and community development projects, such as those undertaken by DAP.“I understand that they are encouraging volunteerism in humanitarian causes just like what happened in the recent Pahang and Kelantan floods.“We hope they can come and talk to us about it, see what are some of the things we’ve done well, if there are any volunteerism components in the upcoming National Service programme, we are willing to share our experiences," Ong said. This month, Impian Malaysia will build a micro-hydro project in Ulu Papar, Sabah, hold an educational camp in Mambong and Sri Aman, Sarawak, and upgrade a road in Pitas, Sabah. – March 6, 2015.
