Texas man steamed after postal carrier tosses package

He posted video of the incident on YouTube and is looking to the USPS for an explanation."I just went back through the tapes to see if the carrier had delivered a package I was expecting from Japan," Weinstein said.Weinstein frequently uses Amazon to purchase a variety of items. As a hobbyist, he builds drones, works on ham radios, and is a tech enthusiast. He does big business through the mail.When an expensive piece of equipment didn't show up, he went looking for it.From his law office, Weinstein scrubbed through surveillance video on his iPhone, hoping the package had arrived while he was working.He was stunned when he saw his package arrived by air, thanks to the carrier."This was a $4,000 piece of electronics, which was just shattered when I opened the box," he said. "She could have walked one or two seconds more and set the package down, but instead she just threw it. This is a U.S. mail postal carrier."This isn't the first time he's had a problem tracking down a delivery, but it is the first time he's seen damage occur.As for the destroyed package, Amazon is accepting the return and wants a copy of the video.Weinstein isn't concerned about the money he spent, he wants someone held accountable."If you go to someone's house and take the mail out of their house — that's a federal crime," he said. "Well, it's also a federal crime to destroy U.S. mail."As for the postal service, McKinney Boyd, USPS public affairs officer, issued this statement by e-mail Thursday afternoon:"We apologize for the inconvenience this customer experienced in Carrollton, TX. Postal employees take great pride in their work delivering for the American public. The Postal Service invests in training all employees to ensure the proper handling of all packages entrusted to us. If we discover an incident of a package being thrown or mishandled, we investigate and take appropriate steps to remedy the situation with the customer and to prevent future incidents by the carrier or clerk involved."A thrown or mishandled package is unacceptable and does not reflect our commitment to our customers and the careful efforts of the thousands of professional, dedicated carriers and clerks in our workforce."

               นักท่องเที่ยวจำนวนมากยังหลั่งไหลไปสัมผัสอากาศที่หนาวเย็นบนยอดดอยอินทนนท์ต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งเช้าวันนี้ นายพรเทพ เจริญสืบสกุล หัวหน้าอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ เปิดเผยว่า ยังคงมีปรากฏการณ์น้ำค้างแข็ง หรือเหมยขาบ มากไปทั่วบริเวณและวันนี้อุณหภูมิก็ลดลงต่ำสุดในรอบปีถึง -3 องศาเซลเซียส ซึ่งตลอดช่วงฤดูหนาวร่วม 3 เดือนที่ผ่านมา มีนักท่องเที่ยวมาที่ดอยอินทนนท์ มากกว่า 2 แสนคน ซึ่งถือว่ามากที่สุดเท่าที่เคยปรากฏมา




               ขณะที่ศูนย์อุตุนิยมวิทยาภาคเหนือจังหวัดเชียงใหม่แจ้งว่า ในช่วงระหว่างวันที่ 23-25 มกราคมนี้ อุณหภูมิสูงขึ้น 1-2 องศาเซลเซียส แต่จะมีหมอกลงจัด จะต้องระมัดระวังเรื่องของการใช้เส้นทาง เพราะทัศนวิสัยจะมองเห็นในระยะใกล้ 
               ส่วนสภาพอากาศวันนี้ ภาคเหนือ มีหมอกหนาในตอนเช้าและอุณหภูมิจะเปลี่ยนแปลงเล็กน้อย อุณหภูมิพื้นราบต่ำสุด 14-15 องศาเซลเซียส บริเวณยอดดอยอากาศหนาวถึงหนาวจัด อุณหภูมิต่ำสุด 5-10 องศาเซลเซียส

George Town in danger of turning into a soulless tourist town

Property owners who are rapidly making quick bucks out of tourists are also losing many old family businesses who have lived in George Town for half a century, potentially losing the original living cultural heritage of the city. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 23, 2015. There is a growing concern that Penang's heritage city of George Town is becoming a tourist town lacking the charms of its original living cultural heritage.With property owners moving towards making quick bucks from tourists, tenants running old family business are gradually being forced to move out."If this trend is not stopped, in 10 years or less, you will find in the city boutique hotels and cafes for tourists, the rich and the famous."George Town is in danger of becoming a tourist town similar to Chinatown in Singapore," said Mark Lay, a New Zealander who lives in Penang.He pointed out serious concerns that the outstanding universal values that had given George Town its cultural heritage, charm and soul would be lost if nothing is being done.George Town, a Unesco World Heritage city, is seeing this happening. At a row of shophouses on Lebuh Chulia, tenants had been ordered to move out to make way for a hotel project by April 1.The owner of the shophouses had submitted a planning application to the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) to convert the properties into a hotel.Because the existing laws do not cover intangible heritage, and the affected tenants who have had their businesses there for decades have no case to challenge the eviction.Lay appealed to property owners to also practise corporate and social responsibility when they make plans to redevelop.Speaking to reporters at one of the shops affected by the eviction, he said 'responsible tourism' should be practised by property owners, instead of just sending eviction notices to tenants."Responsible tourism may be new here, but George Town can take the lead with policies supporting this. It is not too late now to curtail the trend," he said.Lay said in some countries, property owners redeveloping their premises do not evict their tenants and the old businesses, but have them incorporated into the new projects.Lay also said tourists were also getting more educated and those coming to visit George Town had good knowledge of the city."Not every tourist is here for the sun and surf. There are many who are after the old stories of the city and its people. They come into town, talk to locals and learn about their way of life and the history that makes George Town what it is."They are not coming here to see something like Singapore's Chinatown," he said.Cultural heritage specialist guide Joann Khaw also warned that tourists have high awareness and sense of responsibility when they booked their hotel rooms."They ask ahead whether the development of the hotel had caused people to be evicted and displaced. Some chose not to support such businesses."They want to support responsible tourism. More tourists are becoming like that and George Town should be part of this trend instead," she said, speaking of the exchanges she had with tourists in Penang.State local government exco Chow Kon Yeow confirmed recently that the MPPP had received the application from the owner of the Lebuh Chulia shophouses, who is planning to add an addition floor to the present double-storey shophouses for the proposed hotel among others, but nothing had been approved yet.He said the tenants – who run a recycling centre, an antique shop; a chemical supplier; a company that repairs and supplies machines, spare parts and hardware; the old Sky Hotel, and the coffee shop that features a famous roast pork stall - were not refusing to move but were asking for more time.When interviewed by The Malaysian Insider earlier this month, several of the tenants expressed their disappointment and sadness of having to leave the shops they had rented for about half a century. – January 23, 2015.

PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang believes local government elections can lead to racial discord. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 23, 2015.In PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang's worldview, punishments like chopping off hands and stoning for crimes are par for the course but taxpayers cannot elect local government representatives because it can lead to racial discord.He also subscribes to the view that most Malays still remain in rural and semi-rural areas while the Chinese are the majority in urban areas, if his comments against the DAP's proposals to have the third vote is anything to go by."What more when we look at it from a racial aspect which could cause the gap to widen and polarisation to happen, as well as tensions between residents in a town with a Chinese majority."Just compare the RM250 million annual income of a local council in Selangor with the RM50 million of another local council in the same state where the majority is of a different race," Hadi said."We should not see political victory and economic power as being for one race only in a multiracial society."We should not support something that can be a catalyst for instability, or something that would widen the divide between urban and rural communities, and more frighteningly, something that could result in a repeat of the May 13 riots that is a black mark on our country's history," he said.Really? This from the leader of a party that once pushed for an Islamic welfare state as its mission in the last general election, only to once again go back to insisting on hudud for the only state it runs.Is it any wonder that PAS can only be one-term governments in other states than Kelantan? It's insistence for "divine" punishments over taxpayers' rights is a turn-off, even for urban Malays in Terengganu where it ruled for one term from 1999 and Kedah from 2004.From Hadi's comments, one can only surmise that he is not above canvassing for votes among all races but will cite racial factors to deny something as democratic as choosing one's own local government.Or is he against the DAP's proposal for the third vote because that party is against PAS's push for hudud? It this a case of tit-for-tat between the two allies in Pakatan Rakyat (PR)?Perhaps Hadi should get up to speed on the fact that more Malays are now in urban areas, and that urbanisation has spread to more areas in Malaysia – even his sleepy fishing village of Marang in Terengganu.And that local government elections and policies cut through race and religion – it is about services and facilities, and planned development rather than a case of racial supremacy.If one didn't know better, Hadi sounds more like an Umno man rather than a PAS politician who talks about Islam rather than race.Hadi's view reflects that of a man and politician still stuck in the race-and-religion divide, the urban-rural gap politics of a developing Malaysia. But this is Malaysia of the 21st century where Malaysians of all stripes just want a government that represents their wishes.After all, the PR alliance has agreed on local government elections but not hudud.If Hadi truly believes that Malaysians want hudud, why can't he see that they also want local government elections. Or, at the very least, put it to vote in Parliament – the same way he wants hudud to be debated.But, Hadi rather take potshots from his fishing village home and be content with preaching from the pulpit every Friday, instead of confronting his allies in a PR leadership meeting and thrash out all issues.If that is the case, PAS has to review its options of whether to remain in PR. It cannot have a village ustaz leading a party of scholars and professionals in the 21st century. Malaysia deserves better politicians than those who just harp on racial discord as a reason not to have more democracy. – January 23, 2015.
